It has literally changed each day. We started the year on the bottom of the cold water and sandbars. No quick blues bite originally landed us mullet and flounder fishing on the back side and wreck side in the ocean.
It wasn’t a matter of migration at that point. It was a matter of pulling through cold water, baiting up, and seeing what was turning up. We had to get to this past week in order to start to see things try to pull together. It has been amazing to see fish begin to show and push through temperatures that normally would stop them from moving.
First blues found the same food as our mullets. We had a few days where boats were like mini neighborhoods drifting about to graze the bottom. Even the sheepshead fishermen have been going to the bridges in the outboards in search of dinner. Flounder that are caught must go back into the waters until August…I already had keepers…you can cry now.
We saw the light at the end of the tunnel just a bit later this week . Make no mistake, there has been a persistent swell from a storm that is NE of Bermuda that was great for surfers and hard on those fishing the piers and beaches and oceans. What should have been easy really rewarded us a bit on intoThursday as we got another shot on Cobia (and alot of traffic) and some macks in the box. KNOW that the cobia at least in my opinion, are moving through colder water and some are already at the Virginia Bay. Yep. I can count on one hand the days on that particular fish so it is what it is period. Literally three days on this end out of weeks of fishing. We will see what happens once it calms down again!
We are always so happy to have who we have. I have seen both offshore and nearshore charters get blown out in the last two weeks so lets cross our fingers that Summer will settle in at least for a few months shortly! No one minds fishing hard but getting blown out is just part of fishing period.
We look to be getting ready for another busy year. I will say this; we have alot of friends in different industries and we are all working hard to return to where we were! Restaurants and shops may not have the staff they normally have. Be kind. Be patient. They want normal also but unfortunately , it may not QUiTE be where we all want it yet! The bar should never be set so high that a steeplechaser could not get over it,.
It is VACAY! Slow down!
Thank you to some of my stellar regulars and new folks who were kind enough to come aboard.
